About the BMI Calculator

Body mass index (BMI) compares your weight to your height. It is a quick screening number that doctors and health websites use for adults. Enter your weight in kilograms and height in centimetres to see your BMI and category.

How to use the BMI Calculator

  1. Enter your Weight in kilograms.
  2. Enter your Height in centimetres.
  3. Read your BMI and the category beside it.

Good to know

  • BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The usual adult categories are under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight and 30 or more obese.
  • BMI does not measure body fat or muscle. Athletes and very muscular people can have a high BMI without carrying extra fat.
  • Some health bodies use lower cut-off points for South Asian adults. It is not suitable for children or pregnant women.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI a diagnosis?

No. It is a screening tool only. A doctor looks at many other factors, such as waist size, blood tests and family history.

What if I only know my height in feet and inches?

Convert it to centimetres first. One foot is 30.48 cm and one inch is 2.54 cm. The Unit Converter can help.

Is this medical advice?

No. Talk to a doctor or dietitian about your health and weight.
